Barents Willem

Willem Barents (1550–1597) was a Dutch navigator and explorer.

In 1594–1597, he led three Arctic expeditions in search for a northeast passage from Europe to Asia. During these expeditions, he discovered the Svalbard archipelago, and explored the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, becoming the first to ever map it reliably. Willem Barents’ records marked the beginning of meteorological observations in the Arctic, and together with his party, he was the first to complete a wintering in the Arctic.

The Barents Sea was named in his honour, as well as several islands in the Svalbard and the Novaya Zemlya archipelagoes and a settlement on Svalbard.

SCF Barents is a new-generation 174,000-cbm Atlanticmax LNG carrier. The vessel is designed to maximise her energy efficiency and meet the most stringent environmental standards, with their fuel consumption substantially reduced compared to the preceding generation of vessels.
