Widening the appeal of the maritime profession

Sovcomflot Group takes an active part in equipping classrooms at Russia’s leading naval academies – the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping in St. Petersburg and the Admiral G.I Nevelsky Maritime State University in Vladivostok. Cadets from these universities regularly undertake practical training on SCF Group vessels and at SCF training centres. For several years Sovcomflot has supported the sail training ships the Mir and Nadezhda. SCF Group has supported Russian sailing during high-profile international events including EXPO-2010, the 2012 APEC Summit in Vladivostok, and the Tall Ship Races sailing regattas in the Baltic and Black Seas.

In 2012 Sovcomflot Group supported the Far Eastern Floating University (an initiative of the Russian Geographical Society), allowing a unique training ship the Professor Houston (registered to the port of Vladivostok, and until recently based at the Admiral G.I Nevelsky Maritime State University), to remain active. The Professor Houston is designed to allow up to 100 cadets to undertake practical training at one time, preparing them to work in challenging navigating conditions in the Far Eastern and Arctic Seas, and also allowing them to conduct research into the continental shelf of these regions.
